Our current season of CDR Sessions continues with one of London’s most distinctive DJs and producers, Shy One, as we open a new chapter at our new venue, The Carpet Shop. For those new to CDR Sessions, each event includes an in-depth, production-focused interview with a guest artist, exploring their career and creative process. The talk is flanked by openCDR, where producers and artists of all levels and abilities have the opportunity to play their own music on some of the best club sound systems across the UK. All genres and styles welcomed!\\n\\nMali Larrington-Nelson AKA Shy One lives and breathes the eclecticism and diversity of her DJ sets and productions. Having started off DJing on pirate radio as a teenager, she has been influenced by the full spectrum of sounds her hometown of London has birthed and nurtured. Undeterred by those in the scene who called her beats “weird” or “different”, Shy One carved out her own sound, eventually catching the ear of Scratcha DVA, who released the Decaffeinated Love EP and her debut LP Bedknobs and Boomkicks on DVA Music.\\n\\nSince then, she has continued to grow into a somewhat undefinable sound that’s origins are undoubtedly London but take in a wide range of musical cultures, from hip-hop and jazz to house music and brokenbeat. With releases on Rhythm Section, Astral Black, Beats In Space and Apron Records, alongside a BBC Radio 1 Residency and NTS show, Shy One’s practice continues to evolve. Her latest album Mali, released on Touching Bass, further explores the lineage of Black British electronic music while reflecting her own history as a music lover growing up in London.\\n\\nJoin us for an in-depth conversation with Shy One, flanked by openCDR: your chance to bring along your works-in-progress and hear them played on The Carpet Shop’s sound system. We keep our events as accessible as possible, but if you are able, we would appreciate your support of CDR with a £5 donation ticket. Every contribution helps us continue creating space for producers and artists to connect, learn, and grow.
